About the Breed
Breed Purpose:
The Australian Terrier was bred as a vermin hunter on the farms of Australia, not only rats, but also the deadly Eastern and Western brown snakes. Unlike some breeds, which worked alone, Aussies often hunted together, one distracting the snake and the other going for the kill. As a result, they typically get along very well with other dogs, especially other Aussies.
In addition to killing vermin, Aussies also had the vital job of protecting children on the farms from snakes or other threats- there is a strong instinct in an Aussie to nurture a baby or young child. Aussies have been referred to as, "absolutely steadfast and reliable with babies and small children." There is a special bond between a child and her Aussie. They are one of only two terrier breeds bred as companions in addition to hunters.

Temperament:
The Australian Terrier is spirited, alert, courageous, and self-confident. Fierce with rats, snakes, and vermin, they are loving, devoted, and affectionate with people. Shyness or aggressiveness towards people is a temperamental fault.

Size:
The Aussie is between 10 and 11 inches tall at the withers (between the shoulders). They are 1 to 1 1/2 inches longer than tall. Although no weight standard, their weight is in proportion to height, typically 16-20 lbs.

Color:
Blue and tan, including silver and tan variation. Red, including sandy variation.
